Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is used to treat more significant vein problems than traditional sclerotherapy. In most cases, the source of varicose veins and spider veins is a larger vein hidden under the surface of the skin diagnosed using painless, noninvasive ultrasound.
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy identifies and targets the affected veins. Under direct ultrasound visualization, a sclerosant is injected into the vein that scars and closes off the vein, usually relieving symptoms.
After ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, patients report less pain from their veins and that their legs are generally more comfortable, allowing them to return to their normal activities. They also report renewed confidence when wearing clothes that expose their legs since unsightly veins have been addressed.
