Healthy veins carry blood from various parts of the body to the heart and lungs where the blood is re-oxygenated.
Leg veins are divided into two interconnecting networks. Deep veins lie within the muscle where the muscle’s pumping action compresses the veins and helps return blood to the heart. Superficial veins lie just beneath the skin and provide blood to deep veins.
Leg veins have a valve system that, when healthy, prevents the reverse flow of blood down the leg. Deep veins, in general, do not become varicose veins because they are surrounded by strong leg muscles that support the veins through their pumping action.
What causes Varicose Veins?
The veins of the superficial system are most likely to become varicose veins. The exact cause of varicose veins in the superficial system is not known, but the lack of compression by the surrounding muscles certainly plays a role. The veins’ one-way valves no longer function correctly, allowing blood to flow back down the veins. The reverse flow of blood from the deep to superficial system adds to the pressure in the varicose veins. Once the blood has returned to the varicose veins, the blood pools, hindering return of blood to the deep system and ultimately to the heart.
Varicose Vein Symptoms
Left untreated, the condition will likely worsen, resulting in increasingly severe varicose vein symptoms such as:
-Pain in leg veins
-Fatigue and heaviness in leg
-Throbbing, swelling, and bleeding varicose veins
-Ulcer formation of the skin
Spider veins are the smaller superficial veins in the skin that may or may not be associated with underlying varicose veins. They are either blue or red, and although aesthetically unsightly, usually do not cause medical symptoms. Spider veins are a common cosmetic concern for both women and men.
Common Concerns About Varicose Vein Therapy
Patients often ask about the long-term or side effects of varicose vein removal, especially how it could affect future bypass surgeries.
Perhaps the most compelling proof of the effectiveness of varicose vein therapy is to see the actual results of these treatments.
